Thousands gathered in Washington, DC on Saturday (Oct. 10) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the historic Million Man March calling for policing reforms and changes in black communities.
Waving flags, carrying signs and listening to a series of speeches pertaining to police brutality, reparations, politics and other issues affecting Americans of color. The march orchestrated by Louis Farrakhan wove their way through security barricades and souvenir vendors at the U.S. Capitol and spread down the Mall on a sunny and breezy fall day.
Farrakhan, 82, spoke to the crowd on the National Mall in Washington and reflected on the importance of passing the torch to the next generation.
"We who are getting older... what good are we if we don't prepare young people to carry that torch of liberation to the next step? What good are we if we think we can last forever and not prepare others to walk in our footsteps?" he said.
Among the Black Lives Matter activists were also the likes of a few notable names in hip-hop and black culture. J. Cole, Snoop Dogg, Russell Simmons Puff Daddy, Common,Ty Dolla $ign, Dave Chappelle, and Empire star Bryshere Y. Gray were photographed at the rally.
And though Kendrick Lamar was not there, his song “Alright” served as a chant during the march.
The first Million Man March took place in October 1995 and also drew in thousands of attendees from aound the country.
