Have we perhaps been sleeping a little on “Power”? Power is living up to its name. The second season of Starz drama Power premiered on Saturday, June 6, garnering a 0.6 adults 18-49 rating and 1.427 million viewers. Not only were those numbers a series high, they were the highest ratings ever for an episode of a Starz original drama. The previous record was held by the premiere of Spartacus: Vengeance on January 27, 2013, which drew 1.39 million.
The season 2 premiere tripled the audience from the show’s premiere one year ago, which garnered only 462,000 viewers. In other words, the show’s viewership has grown 79 percent from the series premiere. And compared to the season 1 finale, the viewership is up 32 percent.
So what suddenly made the show such a big hit? Could this be part of the Empire effect? It’s certainly possible, though we’ll have to wait and see if, like Empire, Power can continue to improve upon its ratings success.
